Speech Therapy Options for Pediatric and Adult Clients

Speech & Articulation

Pediatrics:

We are skilled in treating articulation delay or differences in children that are impacting speech intelligibility. Speech sound production is an important part of speech and language development! Articulation changes can develop over time, or may be secondary to surgery or dental changes.

Adults:

Adults can also experience changes to speech that impact intelligibility. This may be due to neurologic changes (stroke, TBI, progressive disease) or dentition changes. Aggressive speech therapy is crucial to re-training and/or compensating for speech changes.

Language Skills Therapy

Pediatrics:

You may notice your child is falling behind in school, or they may be receiving speech services at school that can be supplemented with additional therapy at home to maximize potential in meeting their language goals. Private speech therapy services may be beneficial to ensure that your child is able to learn and grow academically.

Adults:

As with speech changes, many adults experience changes in both receptive and expressive language as a results of neurologic changes (stroke, TBI, progressive disease). Our language therapy approach is structured around functional and patient-specific language goals.

Swallowing Therapy

Swallowing difficulty, or dysphagia, occurs in many adults across diagnoses. We see too often patients being discharged from the hospital or rehab center with a diagnosis of dysphagia, or recommendations for a modified diet, without clear follow up information or a plan to return to functional and safe eating and drinking.

Stuttering Therapy

Stuttering, or dysfluency, is an extremely complex change to one's speech pattern. Stuttering is most often present throughout one's life, and some therapy techniques focus on hiding the stutter. This frequently results in feelings of shame, and development of maladaptive secondary behaviors (such as saying um, avoiding words, or avoid eye contact) to avoid stuttering. Christa Wojcik MA, CCC-SLP is trained in Avoidance Reduction Therapy for children, adolescents, and adults who stutter. This therapy approach strips down the speech pattern to reduce the secondary behaviors, adjust the speech pattern to be more comfortable, and forward-moving.

Head and Neck Cancer Services

Speech and swallowing needs should be considered in every patient pre, during and post any treatment for head and neck cancers. Whether treatment involves surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these, changes to the head and neck tissue and speech and swallowing mechanisms are known to be significantly impacted. With early implementation of speech and swallowing therapy techniques, head and neck cancer survivors can help to ward off negative effects of head and neck cancer treatment.
